institute of international summer schools in gender studies of KCGS in Foros

Institute of international summer schools in gender studies of KCGS in Foros (the Crimea, Ukraine) has been created by Kharkiv Center for Gender studies (KCGS) with sponsorship of J.D. and K.T. Macarthur’s Foundation at the basis of annual summer schools in gender studies held by KCGS since 1997 and is one of the most important network resources for institutalization of gender studies in the countries of the former USSR.

Main goal of the Institute of Summer Schools of KCGS is to raise proficiency in gender studies field of young scholars and professors from different regions and gender institutions of the former USSR. For 10 years more than 200 young professors and scholars from 16 countries of the former USSR and Eastern Europe (Armenia, Azerbaijan, Byelorussia, Bulgaria, Hungary, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kirghizstan, Lithuania, Moldova, Russia, Romania, Czech Republic, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Yugoslavia), who have taken three week courses of the Institute of Summer Schools, have got involved into University Network in Gender Studies for the Countries of the Former USSR and established professional contacts with the colleagues from different countries. Thanks to the Institute of Summer Schools around 20 new centers for gender studies and university programs have sprung up in the countries of the former USSR for past couple of years.

how the work of institute of summer schools is organized:

  • professors teaching at the Institute are leading professionals from the countries of the former USSR, Northern America, and Europe;
  • the schools realize interdisciplinary, multicultural, and regionally specific curricula;
  • progressive methodologies and interactive methods are actively used; readers are also provided for courses;
  • participants receive basic resources for development of gender studies in regional universities;
  • a library is also open at the schools and contains the lattest gender editions from different countries of the former USSR;
  • a computer lab is also available for the participants of the schools;
  • participants are provided with Internet and email access;
  • studies at the Institute of Summer Schools, which take place in the old mansion in a very beautiful garden at the seaside provides an opportunity to combine studies and rest and promote unique experience for communication among participants and professors and furthers intensive informational exchange
